This seven-mile long island is the northernmost in a string of barrier islands that continue south to the Florida Keys. A quaint coastal community of single-family homes, low-rise condominiums and beach resorts, Anna Maria Island lies just south of Tampa Bay and is surrounded by the Gulf of Mexico on its western shore and the Sarasota and Anna Maria bays on its eastern shore. It three distinct cities include Anna Maria at the northern end, Holmes Beach in the middle and Bradenton Beach at the southern end. With zoning laws limiting building height, the community's old Florida heritage has been preserved through the years.
